Have you ever wondered: How do sites rank in Google? Why some sites rank on first page in Google and others don’t? What are the factors that Google considers?
If you are a non-technical person, business owner, marketing person or someone who is not an SEO but want to know more about SEO or how sites rank in Google, this article is for you.
SEO (search engine optimization) is a unique field that is a bit recherché for many business owners and non-technical people. As an SEO myself, I think twice before telling anyone what I do because I know I will end up confusing them. But of course in the tech world, it is one of the most popular things and even many businesses are slowly realizing the value of SEO.
I have been an SEO for more than five years. I have seen a lot of articles about SEO tips, latest in SEO, and Google updates but there are very few articles out there that explains SEO in plain English for business people who may not be very technical. So I decided to write one.
What is SEO?
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) means optimising a website for search engines (mainly Google). As part of the process, website is optimised considering more than 200 factors. In easy words, you need SEO to improve your website’s rankings in Google and other search engines.
Why SEO?
SEO is the most cost effective way to get more customers, more online exposure and generate more leads.
Imagine your target customer types a keyword in Google, your site appears on first page, user clicks on the site and proceeds to buy your product or service. SEO can make it possible.
If you are not ranking in Google, you are missing out a massive number of potential customers. Companies spend thousands of dollars every week on paid advertising to appear on first page of Google (Right side ads section). However, more than 80% of users, as per research, still click on natural results that appear on left side of Google search results page. And SEO is required to appear in these natural search results.
Google is used by more than 80% of the users in Australia. When a user types a query such as “accountant in Brisbane”, “College in Brisbane”, restaurants near me and so on. Google returns thousands of results in return of a user’s query. And 85% of users do not go beyond first page. Ask yourself, do you check page 2 and 3?
So for obvious reasons, website owners (businessman or bloggers) want their website on page 1 in Google. SEO is the process that can make it possible.
So above pretty much sums up What SEO Is and why you need it. In my next article, I am going to explain how it is done and what sort of things SEOs do to make your site rank in Google. The content below can get a bit technical so either you can skip it or carry on to explore the amazing world of SEO.
